Gathered from numerous accessions, this collection contains customs documents, financial records, ships' manifests, bills of lading, returns of merchandise, depositions, protests, port clearances and seamen's agreements related to vessels sailing from Connecticut ports, primarily to the West Indies with cargoes of horses. A portion of the collection consists of certificates of measurement of vessels at the port of Hartford, 1796-1804. The portion entitled Middletown and Hartford Shipping Papers encompasses customs documents, financial records, manifests and returns of merchandise for such vessels as the Schooners James, Sea Flower, Helen, Sally, and William, under the command of captains George Cotton, Simeon Stillman, Stephen Butler, Horace Church and Benjamin Olmsted. The general ships' papers include the above-named documents plus freight bills for steam ships going to and from Hartford. Also accounts, bills and inventories kept by Dudley Woodbridge, owner of the Brig Minerva and the Schooner Farmer, under the command of Samuel Chapman and David Mumford. Records of the Schooner Sally owned by William Gaylord include bills for repairing and outfitting the vessel.
